Terms
Terms of use for the Proofbird app during its closed beta, and for this website. Short on purpose. If anything here is unclear, ask us before you rely on it.
What Proofbird is
Proofbird is a Windows program that reads the text in the application you are working in and marks spelling, grammar, style and terminology, with optional rewrites, translation and a chat through an AI engine you connect yourself. It runs on Windows 10 and Windows 11. [check: minimum Windows build and runtime requirements at ship]
Beta software, as it is
The app is in a closed beta. It is unfinished. It will have bugs, some features will change or disappear, and a build may stop working when the beta ends or when a newer build replaces it. We provide it as is, with no warranty of any kind: not that it is fit for a purpose, not that it is error-free, not that it will keep running. Nothing in this section removes rights that the law gives you and does not let us exclude.
Proofbird makes suggestions. You decide whether to accept them. A suggestion can be wrong, and a rewrite or translation can change meaning. Read what you accept, especially in work you deliver to someone else. You are responsible for your text.
Your licence for the beta
For as long as the beta runs and you keep a seat in it, we give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to install and use the app on Windows devices you control, for your own work. The beta is free of charge. Pricing after the beta will be published before anyone is asked to pay. [check: whether beta users get a defined offer at launch]
You may not sell, rent, sublicense or redistribute the app or its language models, remove its notices, or use it to build a service that offers Proofbird's functions to third parties. Taking the app apart to the extent the law allows for interoperability remains your right.
Third-party components inside the app, such as dictionaries, model runtimes and open-source libraries, keep their own licences. The app lists them, together with any model licences, on its About page. [check: the About page lists every component and model licence]
Acceptable use
- Use the app lawfully and on text you are entitled to process.
- Do not attack, overload or probe the beta service, the website or the sign-up function.
- Do not use the app to break the terms of an AI provider you connect to it.
- Do not pass your beta build or seat to someone else; ask us for another seat instead.
Your text is yours
You keep every right to the text you write, check, rewrite or translate with Proofbird. We claim none of it, we do not see it, and we do not use it to train anything. Where you connect an AI engine, what that provider does with the text you send it is governed by your agreement with that provider, not by these terms. See our privacy page for exactly what goes where.
If you send us feedback, bug reports or logs, you let us use them to improve Proofbird, without payment and without naming you.
Third-party engines
Claude Code, ChatGPT Codex, Z.AI, Ollama Cloud, Ollama and LM Studio are products of their respective companies. Proofbird connects to accounts you already hold with them. We do not resell those services, we cannot see or control them, and we are not responsible if a provider changes, limits or ends your access. Names of other companies' products are used only to say what Proofbird works with.
Liability
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect loss, lost profit, lost data or lost work arising from the use of beta software, and our total liability to you in connection with the beta is limited to the amount you paid for it, which during the beta is nothing. This does not limit liability for wilful misconduct or gross negligence, or any liability that cannot be limited under Italian or EU law, including the rights you have as a consumer.
Ending
You can stop using the app at any time by uninstalling it. We can end your beta seat if you break these terms, and we can end or pause the beta itself. When the beta ends we will tell you what comes next. The sections on your text, liability and governing law survive the end of the beta.
This website
The site is offered as is. Its pages describe software that is still changing, so a feature named here may change before it ships. The Proofbird name and logo are ours; do not use them to suggest a connection that does not exist. [check: EU trade mark application pending]
Governing law
These terms are governed by Italian law. Disputes go to the competent court in Italy. If you are a consumer in the EU, you keep the protection of the mandatory law of your country of residence and the right to bring a claim in your home court. [check: whether to reference the EU online dispute resolution platform]
Changes to these terms
We may change these terms as the beta moves on. The date at the top shows the current version. For a change that affects you, we will tell beta users in the app or by the email you gave us before it takes effect; using the app after that date means you accept the new version. If you do not, uninstall the app and tell us.
